Description
Saphfir, sometimes called Saphire, Sapphire, or Hallertau Saphir, has developed quite the cult following. Saphir is almost always used as an aroma hop as it has very low bittering. This is a noble-like variety with one of the lowest alpha acid content of any commercial hops. Expect a citrus bouquet of sweet tangerine and a hint of spice. The low alpha acid range of just 2% to barely 5% minimizes its use as a bittering addition. These characteristics make Saphir a good match for beer styles like Belgian Ales, Wheats, and Witbiers. The best hop substitution for Saphir hops is the German varietal Hallertau Mittelfruh.
